Japanese Craftsmanship Program

Overview

EngageAsia's summer workshop, "Japanese Craftsmanship, Technical Education, and Culture," provided 26 high school teachers from 16 states with an opportunity to explore Japanese trades and crafts from the perspective of tradespeople who work across Japan and the US.

Format

Each virtual workshop session featured an expert specializing in a Japanese craft. The speakers shared their philosophy and approach to their craft, and participants engaged in discussions on key themes and ideas that emerged from the talks. Workshop topics include carpentry, tea ceremony, culinary arts, boat building, and calligraphy.

Goals

  • Teachers developed ideas and skills that are applied in the classroom and future careers

  • Participants created networks and built a network of professionals with a common interest in Japanese craftsmanship
